The city is located on the Murray Valley Highway on the Victorian Side of the Murray River.

The population is around 10,000 with the Swan Hill greater region numbering 30,000 people.

Swan Hill is accessible by road to Melbourne (330km) and Adelaide (610km). There is a V/Line train and bus to Melbourne via Bendigo and a V/Line bus to Adelaide
